Exhausted, sunburned and bubbling with excitement, we departed Solta on a 5am ferry to start the trek home after an amazing week! Work done, new friendships made and a beautiful country visited!
The four groups (Ireland x2, Italy and Croatia) shared accommodation in a former military camp on the island of Solta, just off the coast from Split. The temperature on our arrival was about 26C, the sky was a beautiful clear blue and the sea was glittering. Anticipation was in the air as everyone met for the first time, but games and activities soon broke the ice, with little groups forming to explore the camp and check out the facilities.
Our purpose was the design ways of teaching young people about climate change and every ounce of creativity was called on as the young people created drama pieces and facilitated mini-workshops from early morning. Evenings found us at the beach and nights were spent sitting outdoors chatting, dancing and listening to music — even a bit of star-gazing without the nuisance of light pollution.
The venue itself was a great example of climate awareness — water conservation, solar water heating, vegetarian menu, transport mostly by foot and very limited wifi. Our participants loved it — “the highlight of my summer”, “everyone should have a chance at a trip like this”, “this was so good”. Funding for the whole project was provided through the Erasmus+ Programme, with participants making a contribution to the trip costs.
The results will be on display at a mini-conference in the GEAI centre in Ballinagleragh, Co. Leitrim on Friday 16th February 2018. We’ll post more information as soon as it’s available.
